3) Distinguish between inflexional process and derivational process of word formation.

4)  What is ‘Stylistics’ ? Why is it necessary for students of literature ? Discuss the contributions of J. Sinclair and Geoffrey Leech to stylistic analysis of literature.

5) Describe the speech mechanism and the functions of the various organs of speech.

1)  What are Pidgins and Creoles ? How are these language varieties created ? 

2) List the English Monophthongs and Diphthongs along with examples of words in which they occur. Explain the difference between these two types of vowels.

3) Explain, with examples, the natures of structural ambiguity and ambiguity due to deletion of elements in English sentences.

4) Discuss the nature of the Latin loan words found in English. How did the English language supercede Latin ?

5) Discuss the position and chief uses of English in India.

6)  Write a note on the effects of borrowing on the English language.

7) Describe the English fricatives with examples.

8) Discuss with examples the concept of IC analysis.

9) Write short notes on any three of the following : 4 × 3 = 12

i) Pidgin ii) Class variation of Spoken English iii) Cohesion iv) Dialect mixing in English v) Weak forms of English words.

10) Write short notes on any three of the following : 4 × 3 = 12

i) linking / r / and intrusive / r / ii) dark / l / and clear / l / iii) Assimilation iv) Closing Diphthongs v) Palato-alveolar fricatives.

11) Give suitable examples of the following types of sentences : 3 × 4 = 12

i) NP with Determiner as premodifier ii) NP with PP iii) NP containing a relative clause iv) NP with VP
